Victoria Escalante is an independent woman who runs the tavern which she inherited from her parents. She is
strong-willed and stubborn. She is ahead of her time in believing that women should have as strong a voice in society as men. |

|
The Alcalde maintains that he would win an election for the office of Alcalde "but an election requires more than one candidate to run, and since there is no one to run against me . . ." |

"I will!" interjects Victoria.
"If that's all it takes to get
you out of office, you have an
opponent!" Victoria never hesitates to speak her mind or to take on the cause of injustice. |
 |
| Victoria is also a woman with conflicted feelings. She has feelings for both her dear friend Diego and for the dashing hero Zorro but does not consciously realize that she cares for both men. | ||
 |
She certainly knows that she loves Zorro, and she has promised to wait for Zorro. She knows that Diego is a close friend but seems to be in denial of their mutual attraction and of her feelings for him.
Victoria shows impatience at Diego's behavior on many occasions. She wishes he were different. Clearly, this behavior indicates that she is very much attracted to him but wants him to be more outspoken and daring. She wants him to be more like Zorro. |

| From the episode "One Special Night" . . . Diego and Victoria are forced to spend the night in an old windmill. At first, Victoria seems uncomfortable that they will be spending the night together. After Victoria gets over her initial discomfort, she seems annoyed that Diego is paying no attention to her. |

"And what is this?" "Your side. . .my side, " Diego replies. "How very proper!" exclaims Victoria. |
 |
 |
"I wouldn't have it any other way," states Diego. "Neither would I!" responds Victoria, seeming irritated. |
 |
 |
Victoria looks annoyed when Diego lays down and closes his eyes. She appears to want Diego to pay attention to her. Perhaps she wishes he would at least try to take advantage of her. |  |
 |
A little later, Victoria points out that Diego had seemed different that day. |  |
 |
"You were very impressive today. . .Although speech-making is very different from action, isn't it? Why don't you ever do anything?" |  |
 |
Later, Victoria continues, "Something happened today. Something that I never noticed before. . .when you stood up to the king's emissary. There was something about you. . .well you seemed different somehow. . ." |  |
 |
Victoria is interrupted when the storm blows the door open. Victoria shivers from the cold air. |  |
 |
Diego gives Victoria his jacket to warm her, and they pause, gazing into each other's eyes. Victoria is uncomfortable and breaks the spell by thanking him. |  |

Victoria is very agitated when she learns from Alcalde Ramón that Señorita Herrera is staying at the de la Vega hacienda. |  |

"She is staying at the de la Vega hacienda? Alone? Oh!. . .The first single woman to appear in two years and suddenly, he is the gracious host!" |  |
 |
"Do I detect a hint of envy?" the Alcalde asks with a smile.
"Don't be silly. . .Diego's not my type at all!" exclaims Victoria. |

When Diego walks into the tavern and speaks to Victoria, she slams down a wine bottle in response and stalks away. Without question, Victoria is jealous and does have feelings for Diego but is not willing to admit it. |  |
From the episode "Heir Apparent" . . . Don Gregorio asks Victoria to marry him, and she replies, "There is someone else." |

He asks Victoria, "Who is it? It's not Diego de la Vega is it?" Victoria responds, almost too quickly, "Oh, please! Don't be silly!" |
 |
Victoria's greatest fear is that she will lose Zorro and never get to be with him. She knows that he could be killed at any time, or he could change his mind and decide that he wants someone else. The latter fear is great since she doesn't know who he is or where he is. |

From the episode "An Affair to Remember" . . . Victoria is upset because Zorro won't share his secret with her.

"You're trembling," Zorro observes. Victoria has trouble speaking. "It's just. . .each time I see you might be the last." "No, that's not true Victoria. I will always be with you. I want you to know what is in my heart." "Yes, but you said. . .you told me. . ." Zorro realizes that Victoria needs reassuring so he decides to give her a ring. "This was my mother's." "It's beautiful." "This is a symbol of our future." Victoria is surprised. "Our future?" "Will you marry me?" "Marry you? Now who's proposing, the man or the legend?" "The man. What is your answer?" "Yes! Absolutely and definitely yes!" |

From the episode "Love Potion Number Nine" . . . Victoria apologizes for trying to give Zorro a love potion. |

"I'm sorry. It's just that I was so eager to believe in Dr. Wayne's potions because there's not an hour in the day, not even a minute that I don't think about you; but unfortunately, I only get to see you [when] there's a crisis in the pueblo." |

Zorro responds, "Our love is sorely tested again and
again. I have faith we will endure." They kiss. |

Victoria asks, "Why can't we be together? No outlaws, no Alcalde, no injustice, why?" "That's why." Zorro leaves hastily as the lancers try to force open the door to the tavern. |
