DON DIEGO (interrupting)

ANGLE - VAQUERO #2 on the gallop snags a goat-bladder of wine hanging behind a display and drinks. ANGLE - VAQUERO #3 takes his horse through livestock, scattering chickens and ducks. ANGLE TO JAIL - MENDOZA
and several of his Soldiers appear. The Soldiers huddle behind
MENDOZA Ayy. . .Gomez and his vaqueros. Nothing but trouble. WhyGOMEZ Hola, Mendoza!MENDOZA Hola, Gomez. . .Your men are disturbing the peace. In the name ofGOMEZ You order them, Mendoza. My men have been driving cattle threeMENDOZA (mumbling)Nothing happens. He turns to find that the Soldiers have slunk off. Gomez laughs and rides away, scattering dirt on Mendoza's uniform.
MENDOZA (CONT) How I wish the Alcalde were here! Ah, yes, he would have a courseRelieved to have found a solution, he reenters the Jail. EXT. HACIENDA GARDEN - DAY - DIEGO & FRANCISCA stroll together after lunch.
FRANCISCA Your concern is all over your face, Don Diego -- but only natural. A Guitarist is playing a rapid flamencan dance. Gomez and AT A TABLE - MENDOZA prepares for a large supper. But he knows trouble is afoot. MENDOZA What does Gomez have against food? . . First lunch. . .now supper!AS BEFORE The Guitarist finishes. Elena strides angrily toward Gomez.
ELENA Gomez. . .Get your pigs out of my Tavern, and as much as it painsGOMEZ I can think of better refreshment, Seņora. . .Your lips.He takes her hand and is preparing to kiss her, when:
ZORRO (o.s.) One moment!THE BALCONY ABOVE - ZORRO
ZORRO (CONT) Forgotten your manners, Gomez? On your knees before a lady!
Zorro's whip snakes downward, curls around Gomez's ankles and WIDE - VAQUERO #1
charges the staircase, where Zorro meets him midway, ducks a blow, Vaquero #2 starts toward Zorro with a chair.
MENDOZA
MENDOZA Sometimes Zorro can be a blessing. Now maybe I can eat in peace!ZORRO & VAQUERO #2 who swipes at Zorro with the chair. Zorro's sword slices the leg, and the Vaquero disgustedly throws the stump away.
MENDOZA
ZORRO GOMEZ The plate hits him on the head then ricochets across to MENDOZA
who is about to take a bite out of a burrito. The plate knocks the burrito out
ZORRO
MENDOZA (to Zorro)ZORRO Ah, but hasn't the Alcalde often said that a good soldier is aMENDOZA True.ZORRO Then your duty is to your supper, Mendoza.MENDOZA But when I'm finished, you'll be gone.He looks around. Zorro is already gone, into the kitchen. INT. KITCHEN - ZORRO & ELENA
ZORRO Anger brings a very pretty blush to your cheeks, Seņora Elena.ELENA (fervent)NOISE o.s. signals the approach of the Soldiers.
ZORRO The Alcalde's men! I must be off before MendozaHe clambers up the chimney and escapes to the roof.
