John Garman Hertzler was born in Port Royal, Pennsylvania. Since his father was in the Air Force, he moved a lot during his childhood. The family lived in Texas, Casablanca, Omaha, and Maryland. Hertzler played football for several years. After high school he played for Bucknell University as left defensive and outside linebacker before he became an actor. After completing a theater course he played in more than 50 Shakespeare shows. On TV he has had several guest appearances in shows like "Seinfeld," "Dr. Quinn," "Lois & Clark," "Quantum Leap," "Highlander," "Diagnosis Murder," and "General Hospital". In the New World Zorro series, he played Zorro's evil counterpart Alcalde Ignacio De Soto for two seasons. He was in "And Justice for All" with Al Pacino in 1975 and was in "The Prophecy II" with Christopher Walken in 1997. Hertzler played Klingon General Martok on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" for four years during the 1990's. In addition to acting, Hertzler also is involved in acting and directing. John supports the Scleroderma Research Foundation, which does research about the rare but dangerous disease Scleroderma.
